Counting Down: Canadian International Fashion Film Festival 2016

On July 22 & 23, 2016, Calgary Alberta will host the first-ever CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL FASHION FILM FESTIVAL,exploring the diverse and shifting landscape of fashion in film and honouring the genre’s best. It is a date you don't want to miss. Big congrats to Katrina Olson-Mottahed, Director and Co-Founder of CANIFFF. This will be another big step for the Calgary fashion industry.

Following in the footsteps of fellow festival partners Berlin, La Jolla, New York and Australia, this summer, CANIFFF will bring Canada into the fold of an exclusive global community, now recognizing fashion in film. “Fashion has always played an integral role in film” says Katrina Olson-Mottahed, CANIFFF Director and Co-Founder. “Now however, fashion is the protagonist in its own genre and the talent behind – and in the scenes – is being recognized.”

The fastest growing medium in the industry, film is reinventing the way high fashion is viewed. Still extremely new, fashion film is unquestionably one of the most unique and exciting avenues for expression within the industry.

The two-day event will take place at Calgary’s iconic Glenbow Museum, and screen films adjudicated by industry experts including Sara Maino, Senior Editor for Vogue Italia, Lionel Cipriano, Senior Art Director for Vera Bradley; Kelly Rae, Former Director for Complex Media; Niccolo Montanari, Co-Founder of the Berlin Fashion Film Festival; Malwina Gudowska, writer for Vogue, Elle and Flare; and Wes Bell, fashion photographer/director.

Also in the festival line-up is very special guests Ace Norton and Lars Ruch, from Commondeer Production Company who will be hosting a screening and panel discussion. The filmmaking duo, which have collaborated on projects with the likes of Snoop Dogg, boast an impressive fashion filmmaking resume with accolades from the Australian, Berlin, Milan and Bokeh international fashion film festivals.

“We are privileged to have Ace and Lars on board for the 2016 event. They are legends in the fashion film industry and have been extremely supportive of our festival and what we are trying to accomplish here in Canada,” says Olson-Mottahed.

In addition to celebrating fashion film, CANIFFF founders hope the festival will further establish Canada’s relevancy in the fashion industry by pulling in local talent such as jurors Lionel Cipriano, an ACAD alum (who was the Art Director for Tommy Hilfiger before moving to Vera Bradley), and Calgarian Kelly Rae, and also by providing a platform for emerging talent.

“We have received submissions from some of the best in the fashion film industry which is extremely exciting,” says Antonija Klotz, CANIFFF Creative Director and Co-Founder. “That said, we are encouraging new artists to submit as well. We see CANIFFF as an opportunity to cultivate talent and, as such, advance the genre as a whole.”

Partnering with the festival is the Ethical Fashion Initiative a joint agency of the United Nations and World Trade Organization and Nest a non-profit organization, committed to the social and economic advancement of global artisans. As part of the festival’s mission to explore topics of current and growing relevance within the industry, the focus of the 2016 event is ethical fashion.

“We wanted the festival to have a focus, particularly on ethical fashion and its burgeoning role, not just within this genre, but the industry as a whole,” says Klotz. “The festival presents a unique opportunity to educate. Of course however, first and foremost, CANIFFF is about recognizing the best in fashion film.”

FONDAZIONE PRADA: THE EXHIBITIONS BY THEASTER GATES AND NÁSTIO MOSQUITO

Fondazione Prada is presenting the exhibitions “True Value” and “T.T.T.-Template Temples of Tenacity” from 7 July to 25 September 2016 by Theaster Gates and Nástio Mosquito respectively. Conceived by Elvira Dyangani Ose as independent projects, the two exhibitions include installations, site-specific works and projections, as well as collective experiences and musical events that actively involve the public.

“True Value” brings together a selection of existing works and new commissions in two different spaces at Fondazione Prada. The Cisterna features works in which the artist explores habitual, everyday things, immersed in the most evocative Black aesthetics. Gates operates on the conviction that everyday objects convey a deep understanding, not only intrinsic to their material aspect, but reminiscent of the experiences in which they have been immersed. On the first floor of the Podium, Gates hosts True Value (2016) —the installation after which the exhibition is named—which presents his rendition of an abandoned hardware store.True Value gathers materials, objects and tools removed from their original context and relocated in an art environment, deploying a framework to formulate a poetic and pragmatic space around objects of trade and human relationships those economic and labour exchanges create. The exhibition is a further opportunity to explore certain nearby cultural and commercial entities, observing local stories, socio-political patterns, and economically and culturally under-explored communities in the hope of setting in motion a new cartography through which to visit and engage an overlooked Milan. Prompting a series of exchanges that will take place in the exhibition space by means of public debates and readings, and community gathering

“T.T.T.-Template Temples of Tenacity” features three entirely new works by Mosquito and take place on the ground floor of the Podium, the Cinema and the outside spaces of Fondazione Prada. The project comprises three distinctive elements for which Mosquito has collaborated with a group of international artists.WEorNOT (Nastivicious’ Temple #1) (2016) is a site-specific installation featured on the ground floor of the Podium, conceived and realized by Nastivicious —the collective that Mosquito and Spanish artist Vic Pereiró founded in 2008— in collaboration with illustrator Ada Diez. Through this collaboration, the Podium turns into a contemporary temple, a platform for collective communion, in which the glass surface of the façades, covered by caricature-like illustrations, are transformed into large-scale stained glass windows. Mosquito has collaborated with musician Dijf Sanders, artist Chilala Moco, and choir The Golden Guys directed by Paola Milzani for the production of I Make Love To You. You Make Love To Me. Let Love Have Sex With The Both Of Us (Part 1 – The Gregorian Gospel Vomit) (2016), inspired by the Christian hymn Jesus Loves Me accredited to Anna B. Warner (1860). This performative experience will be held in the open courtyard of Fondazione Prada and will involve two choirs.

Mosquito will also present Synchronicity Is My Bitch: The Cinematic Experience (2016), to be hosted in September at Fondazione Prada. It is an audiovisual work assembling the artist’s latest album, Gatuno, Eimigrante & Pai de Família (2016), with a number of visual and filmic references extracted from a series of African films, documentaries and forms of vernacular television from the past twenty years.
